If you're an American citizen who uses the popular video sharing app TikTok and tried to access the app earlier today you were greeted with a message stating the platform was banned in the US and that the team was working with President Trump to get the app back up and running. While the ban didn't last long at all, many people were upset and lost access to a huge platform they used daily to get their news and to interact with likeminded people. As someone who never uses the app I wasn't too upset to see it getting banned, but I was upset that in a country where so called freedom of speech exists a app was banned. This also brings up a good subject that I sort of brought up in a way in my last article "Why you should have a forum." Too many people rely on social media to share their content and these platforms can go down at any moment in time. This is why everyone should look into hosting their own platforms, if you're in control of your own content then it'll never be taken down. Case in point, society relies too much on social media as a whole. The current state of the internet as a whole is bad. Thankfully there's still quite a few of us who prefer to have our own communities, where we know that unless we neglect them they aren't going anywhere. Also since this ban was short lived, I highly doubt anyone really took the time to look into hosting their own content, and it probably didn't open their eyes. I know this article will fall on deaf ears just like the status I made earlier today on Facebook, but it's something that I really felt needed to be brought up in an article rather than just one of my blog posts. For those interested in what I said on Facebook I will add my post here.
"The TikTok ban is here! It's stupid that a platform was banned in America where we're supposed to have freedom of speech but this also proves that the current state of the Internet relying on companies to host their content is bad and I hope people will open their eyes and start making their own platforms that they're in control of so their content will never be taken down. The 00s was better for the Internet because everyone had their own websites that they customized to their liking and they wouldn't get taken down unless they didn't pay for their hosting, it went against their hosts tos or they simply forgot about it and the hosting company shut down. And if you don't know how to host your own websites, there's plenty of resources you can look up and websites like Administrata.net that can help you! Go out and make your own platforms! Get off social media, because one day even Facebook can easily take down your content. I know this will fall on deaf ears because let's face it people are set in their ways but I hope this ban will open your eyes a bit and I hope you go install your own instance of Peertube, where you're in control of your own video platform. https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%…lTbPu7wke3WrDPo "
