OpenAI considering its own social network to compete with Elon Musk’s X

    • OpenAI is considering building a social network to compete with Elon Musk’s X and Meta’s Instagram, a source familiar with the plans confirmed to CNBC.
    • The project is still in its early stages, said the person, who asked not to be named due to confidentiality.
    • OpenAI is considering building a social network to compete with Elon Musk’s X and Meta’sInstagram, a source familiar with the plans confirmed to CNBC.
    • The project is still in its early stages, said the person, who asked not to be named due to confidentiality. It’s based on the popularity of OpenAI’s newest image-generation feature, which has led to an overloading of the company’s servers.
    • The Verge was first to report on the project. OpenAI declined to comment.
    • In March, OpenAI debuted its latest image-generation tool, the inspiration for the potential social media project, as a way to produce everything from diagrams, infographics and logos to business cards and stock photos. The feature can also use an image as a starting point for art, such as a custom painting of a pet or editing a professional headshot.
    • Images of anime-style renderings of users’ uploaded photos have been going viral on X and other social media apps, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman changed his X profile photo to an image generated by the new feature.
    • While it is “super fun seeing people love images” in ChatGPT, “our GPUs are melting,” Altman posted on X late last month, referring to graphics processing units, which power AI training and workloads. He added that that the company would temporarily limit the feature’s usage as it works to make it more efficient.
    • OpenAI faces hefty competition in the fast-growing generative AI market, including from Musk’s xAI, which said last month that it had acquiredX, also controlled by Musk. Altman and Musk are simultaneously involved in a heated legal battle, largely centering around OpenAI’s effort to transform into a for-profit entity. Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI, which was launched in 2015 as a non-profit research lab.

Do you really need another social media site? I really don’t think so. What are your thoughts on this?

  • I'm with you on this, I don't think they need to make a social media platform. We've already got plenty of them, and I can see it maybe gain traction when it first opens but then quickly die off.

Most definately. I don't see it doing well at all. Even Vine is making a return relatively soon along with Digg. I'd rather see Digg's return than anything else though along with Vine, but not an the launch of OpenAI social media site, lol.

  • I wonder when Digg will be opened for everyone. I don't think I ever got a invite code yet lol. I also wonder if OpenAI is still going to open up their own social media platform.

I'm in the same boat as you. I didn't receive an invite code either. I'd honestly say it'll probably open up by March or April of next year, possibly sooner.

  • I actually think the idea of more competition in the social media space is a good thing. Most major platforms have settled into their niches, and very few of them have any real, direct competitors anymore. A shake‑up would be healthy for both the industry and the users.

But OpenAI launching a social network? That’s where I’m a lot less convinced.

There is huge potential in a platform that has strong AI systems built into the backend: better moderation, faster response to harmful content, and maybe even real progress on misinformation. The tech could genuinely solve problems that current platforms struggle with. The issue is whether people would trust it. The moment users see “content is controlled by AI,” a lot of them are going to assume the worst, even if the system is doing something beneficial.

And realistically, I doubt we’d get a normal social network with AI quietly improving things behind the scenes. The more likely outcome is a platform built around AI‑generated content; an Instagram where nothing you see actually happened, or a Twitter‑style feed where half the posts are machine‑written. That’s not something I’d personally want to use.

I think the future of social media is traditional platforms enhanced by AI tools, not AI replacing the social part entirely. AI can make moderation, safety, and user experience better, but a fully AI‑driven social network feels like the wrong direction. Unless OpenAI is planning something completely non‑AI‑focused, which would be like McDonald’s opening a store that doesn’t serve food, I’m not sure how well this idea lands with the general public.

I agree. There's also a huge competition in line with Meta's own AI system "Vibes", so they do have a slight advantage here over openAI as well. I actually wonder when or if they'll fully intergrate into Facebook's ecosystem as well.

Currently it's used as a sharing and remixing platform.

I do think that OpenAI will have a successful opening social media site if they plan to launch as one. They convinced throughly when they launched their Sona video app and it was a huge success story. it is probably one of the biggest video making services rn.

The future of social media is currently moderated by AI tools as well, with Reddit using it, along with Facebook and Twitter for moderation/safety, so it is a huge step in the right direction. More platforms entering the seen is a great thing as long as we see more quality features for all.
