OpenAI launches ChatGPT search, competing with Google and Microsoft

  • On Thursday, OpenAI introduced a new search feature within ChatGPT, bringing its popular AI chatbot into direct competition with search giants like Google, Microsoft’s Bing, and Perplexity. The new feature, dubbed ChatGPT Search, goes beyond typical chatbot responses, offering real-time information on sports scores, stock updates, news, weather, and more through live web searches and collaborations with data providers. After beta-testing “SearchGPT” in July, OpenAI is now rolling out the feature more widely, potentially reshaping how people access real-time information online.

This launch could create fresh challenges for Google’s hold on the search market. Since ChatGPT’s debut in November 2022, Alphabet investors have speculated about OpenAI’s ability to attract users looking for alternative search experiences that feel more interactive and conversational. Following OpenAI’s announcement, Alphabet shares dipped slightly, reflecting these ongoing concerns.

Could this new functionality mark the beginning of a shift in how we search?

  • This is interesting. Really explains the first search result in Google being AI now.

However, I'm skeptical of the answers provided because JIJO (junk in junk out) can be applied here. You don't know what information was fed to get that answer, so you still need to check the sources to determine if it's truthful.

It feels like they just replaced the #1 search result with a muddy #1 search result.

That is to say, you could always have at least 99.9% trustworthiness that the #1 result was going to give you the correct answer. However, with AI at the lead, you don't know if they combined #1-20 results as the answer and there is something incorrect in the AI-generated answer, but can't quite put your finger on it because it's not absolutely incorrect.
